In my younger days, I said, "Just go!" Now, I say to "be informed." Yes, travel is still fun and traveling alone has its special benefits as you're likely to meet tons of nice people. But I totally understand the trepidation of going at it alone. Hence, there are many groups that set up women's trips that are great if you don't have a travel buddy.
I've been a lifelong traveler. My first big trip was to Asia in 1972. It rocked my world. Now I love the freedom of taking off on my own. I'm older, wiser, and cautious. The rewards are worth it. I play it safe, know how to pace myself, and stay fully present. I make sure to pack well, tether my phone to me, keep several credit cards in various places, write down phone numbers, and take copies of my documents in case they are lost. I take a small medical kit and a backup phone charger. Valuables are in a money belt, and water and a sweater are in a light day pack.
I like doing exactly what floats your boat. Eat, sleep, and see what you want, when you want. The world is a friendly place despite what the news says. Some of my most heartwarming experiences have been with people who didn't speak a word of English. A smile and a hearty laugh go a long way in making new friends.
